Moonchild

A Japanese Movie in 2003 starring Gackt, Hyde from L'arc en ciel and Wang Lee Hom, has successfully brought me into tears tonight. I have watched this film for 3-4 times now, but not even for once I could hold my tears.

Don't get me wrong, it's not the type of Korean movie called 'Maundy Thursday' that will absolutely make you cry with every sad scene they showed you. But Moonchild is a movie that combined, friendship, love, comedy, with a little bit of matrix effect that sometimes look kinda ridiculous to me. But it didn't ruin the whole movie. What I mean is that, the movie will put you in a melancholic situation for about hours after you watched it.

Na maybe, it's just me who recently have become so melancholic, too sensitive, and really sad because of the bitterness of goodbye that I will soon experience. But seriously, no matter how many times you have through the phase of saying goodbye, you will never be too ready to ignore the feeling.

Well, go back the to the movie.

Moonchild talks about a vampire, played by Hyde, who was just being left by his comrade, found a friend, a little child, called Sho, who despite the monstrosity  didn't feel afraid of the vampire. Both of them grew together in a land called Mallepa, in which many immigrants from mainland China, Taiwan, and Japan live together. In this place many people are willing to fight with each other in order to survive and reach freedom.

This little child was actually an orphanage along with his brother, Shinji, and their friends Toshi. The three of them manage to survive by stealing from others. Even after they grow up, Sho and Toshi , along with the vampire, named Kei, still do the stealing for their life.

One day they, when they want to steal from a gang, they met a Taiwanese called Son, who was planning to kill the boss gang in order to take revenge for his sister's pain, who was being raped by the boss. Accidentally they all become friends, Kei, Sho, Toshi, Son, and his sister, Yi Che. Later that night, they all go the beach and took a picture there. When Son gave an idea to go again to the beach at the day rise. Sho and Toshi was worried about Kei who can't get under sun, because he's a vampire. But Kei promised that they will all together go to the beach again.

One day Yi Che, who stop talking since she was a child, and Son invite their friends to attend the ceremony of a new painting, drawn by Yi Che, in the neighbourhood's park . Despite his situation, which makes him unable to come out in a daylight, Kei couldn't come. And Toshi, who was planning to come, encounter two people from the gang who attack him because someone found out that he was using drugs in the pizza he sell in order to make everyone sleep, so his friends could steal. Toshi was brought chained to the ceremony that has finished. Suddenly, Kei came, because it's raining. But Toshi was shot because he wants to help Kei, who was already at the gunpoint. Toshi then died.

Kei was mad and attack the two people. Later he drank the blood from the people in order to keep on living. Because of this, Son and Yi Che found out that Kei was a vampire.

Years later after Kei was captured by the police, Sho became a gang leader in the town and married Yi Che, who actually love Kei, and they have one daughter. Son joined another gang, that has killed Toshi, because the gang leader promised the prosperous living for all Taiwanese.

The things has gone differently for each other, that Sho was mad at Son because of his decision. He also missed Kei, who was living in a prison far away from Mallepa. One day after the Son's gang kill Sho's brother, Shinji, Sho decided to kill all the gang member included Son. And he promised to make Son's family suffer. Because they fight with each other, suddenly Yi Che talked because she couldn't take it anymore. But not long after, they found out that Yi Che was sick, and almost all her memories was lost. In a helpless situation, Yi Che mistaken Sho as Kei.

Sho, who was in depressed, call for a help from Kei, who will be executed by the next morning. Kei, who recently show his hope for being put to death instead of living alone and living by draining people's life, made up his mind and ran away from the prison to met Sho.

Sho then asked Kei to be involved in the revenge. He wants Kei to promise to take care of Yi Che and their son, Hanna, if he's dead. Both of them then go to meet the gang. After all the gang members are dead, and also the gang's leader. Sho met Son. Both of them involved in gun fight, and Sho wants Kei not to help by fighting under the sun, which made it impossible for Kei to interfere.

After they all only got each one bullet left, they plan to count to three, and whoever shot the gun first will win, and the living one should take care after the other's family. Unexpectedly, Sho didn't load the gun at all, and he was shot by Son.
Kei then found them and was mad at Son who shot Sho. Son said to Kei that it was destiny, but Kei shot him first. Kei was really sad, that he make Sho a vampire so that he still live.

Kei fulfil his promise to take care of Hanna, because Sho refuse to tell Hanna that he has become a vampire. And Hanna grew up to be a painter just like her mom. When Hanna was planning to go abroad for her study, Kei met Sho again.

Both of them then go to the beach to see the sunrise, which means they want to get themselves killed by the sun. On their way to the beach, Sho sang the song about the orange sun and the song about farewell. After the sun rise, Kei and Sho met again with Yi Che, Son, and Toshi, who were already waiting for them to take a picture again.

End.

The thing that amazes me the most is the friendship. I found out that I was so touched by the movie in which the actors are all friends, and even after they've gone through some difficulties, they're all still friends in the end.

The saddest thing to me is the song that show me the sorrow of goodbye and loneliness.

This story is really good, and the plot was excellent. There are some scene, that link to another scene and it seems like they give us a deep message. It is maybe one of my favorite Japanese movies. If you're okay with some love between guys, and some ridiculous but cute matrix effect, and how easy they beat the gang members, you should watch it. It's the story that they offer. And it's the story that has put me in a melancholy mood.

夕暮れに君と見た オレンジの太陽
泣きそうな顔をして 永遠のサヨナラ

In the evening, I watched the orange sun with you
We were crying as we say an eternal farewell
